6/26/09 Kris Allen, Adam Lambert Reveal Plans Behind “American Idol” Tour American Idol kicks off its summer tour on July 5th, trekking Kris Allen and crew through 50 cities in just under two months. What can fans expect of Season Eight’s Top 10 on an arena stage? Adam Lambert promises a “post-apocalyptic-rocked-out-space-disco-funk” look to his ensemble, while Matt Giraud is gearing up for dance lessons courtesy of tour choreographer JaQuel Knight, who was the creative brain behind Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video. Plenty of laughs are also in store, if a tour preview held yesterday morning (pre-Michael Jackson news) in Burbank is any indication. Blame Giraud, who all-too-enthusiastically led his fellow finalists in a group rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” complete with dueling pianos (Scott McIntyre), hoots and snickers (ahem, Megan Joy). You could say that for the first time since these former hopefuls auditioned, they’re having fun with no consequences. “To not have to worry about where the camera’s gonna be or where you’re standing is so liberating,” says Anoop Desai, who’ll be reprising “My Prerogative” as one of his show numbers. Allen is also adjusting to a new Idol world, and the idea of building his own set list. “People want to see you do songs from the show, but it’s nice to be able to throw in something that you want to do and really mold your time onstage,” he says. (His list includes “Hey Jude,” “Heartless” and “No Boundaries.”) It’s a balancing act they’re all accustomed to, and for his part, Lambert chose tunes by a couple of his idols, Muse and David Bowie. “I like to be associated with Bowie in any way because he’s a huge inspiration for me,” he explains. “So I’m performing the song as a way to honor him as an artist.” Lambert’s set list includes “Life on Mars,” “Fame” and “Let’s Dance.” (Get all our essential Adam Lambert coverage — photos, video and more — here.) Megan Joy is also taking on an artist that should be a natural fit — she’ll perform Amy Winehouse’s “Tears Dry On Their Own,” while Giraud is sticking with a proven crowd-pleaser, his rendition of “Georgia On My Mind.” Danny Gokey won’t reveal which songs he chose, only that two are from the show and two are “nude songs,” he says with a slip of the tongue, no doubt triggered by exhaustion. Indeed, there’s little rest for the Idol weary. Allen says it was two full post-finale weeks before he got his first decent night of sleep. “I was at home and just conked out,” he laughs. “I didn’t wake up until, like, two in the afternoon. It was incredible.” Lambert, on the other hand, took a quick break soon after his whirlwind press tour in New York. “I had four days off and spent it with a special somebody in Santa Barbara,” he coos. “It was a really relaxing mini-vacation and very helpful.” But since then, it’s been non-stop drama for the runner-up who’s currently embroiled in a battle with Hi Fi Records that could turn legal when the label releases an album of his pre-Idol demos. Asked if he feels like he’s constantly putting out fires, Lambert tells Rock Daily, “You could say that. I’m like a fireman… and a firestarter at the same time.” Of course, fame also has its perks, like getting a little guidance from Madonna. “She gave me some really good advice on the downsides of all the notoriety,” says Lambert. “To stay positive, keep your eye on the prize, really inspirational stuff. She knew I was doing press and said, ‘It’s hard talking about yourself, isn’t it?’ ” The moment was “major,” Lambert acknowledges, but he admits that the queen of pop, who’s known to abstain from all things TV, didn’t know much about him — or anything at all. “My friend who introduced us gave her a little back story before we met,” he recalls. “I didn’t know what to expect. It’s the most star-struck I’ve ever been, my heart was beating really fast and I stammered a lot, but she was really cool.” Pretty soon, these idols will be on the opposite side of stammering fans — and an adoring celebrity or two — an exciting prospect considering they spent the better part of 2009 in isolation. Allison Iraheta, for one, is just happy to have the girls around. “I missed them,” she says, “and it’s only three of us on the tour, so you know our bus will be the party bus.” She’s not referring to binge drinking or any such acts of debauchery — it’s all about the video game console. The internal memo, which was published on TMZ.com Thursday, is typed on Music Publishers Company of America paper and dated June 23 with the subject as “Adam Lambert – ‘On With The Show’ – track listing.”The flamboyant glam rocker is listed with 50 percent songwriting credit on “Beg For Mercy,” “Crawl Thru Fire,” “Kiss And Tell,” “Just The Way It Is,” “Turning On,” “Runaway,” “15 Minutes of Fame,” “The Circle” and “mp3 Killed The Record Companies.”“Want” and the title track are credited to Michael Burtscher.Last Friday the tune “Want” was released online with Hi Fi Records issuing a statement explaining it was the first single from On With The Show, which the singer co-wrote and recorded pre-“Idol” fame between 2007 and 2008. The label announced it would be releasing the album on Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records this summer. Lambert then released a statement of his own, saying he was hired in 2005 as a studio singer “to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. … [I] can't wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like." On Wednesday a Hi Fi Recordings rep told Usmagazine.com "The songs were recorded in a professional recording studio with top notch musicians and producers since the music was always meant to be released. Of the 11 songs that will appear on the album, On With the Show, Adam co-wrote eight with Monte Pittman (Madonna’s guitar player). As co-writer and performer, Adam will receive significant royalties just as any superstar artist would.”Thursday evening Lambert released another statement following the leaked internal Hi Fi Records memo."I was shocked to learn that songwriting demos of songs that I co-wrote and recorded over the past few years may be released in an album. Like a rough draft that a writer does before finishing a book, I did not intend my work on these demos to be heard by the public. I was unaware that anyone intended to release these recordings until I heard about it in the press, and I'm very disappointed by this entire situation."Hi Fi Recordings has since responded to Lambert's latest statement."As we've already outlined, releasing this music was always the plan. That plan was changed by Nineteen Recordings after Adam won America over with his extaordinary talent. It's a shame that his management/record company choose to disavow their clients work and discredit him as a songwriter. ... 06/22/09 Adam Lambert Addresses “On With the Show” as “Want” Heads to iTunes UPDATE

“Want,” the first single off a pre-Idol collection of songs sung by Adam Lambert titled On With the Show, will be available on iTunes starting tomorrow, June 23rd. On With The Show, which is due out later this summer — before Lambert’s official debut on 19 Recordings via RCA — features 11 tracks Lambert recorded during his three-year partnership with producer Malcolm Welsford and Wilshire Records, who will release the disc. A press release boasts that eight of the 11 songs on On With The Show were co-written by Lambert, and that the album features “recent tracks” recorded “over the course of 2007/2008, right before Lambert’s meteoric rise to prominence.” However, in a statement Lambert issued this weekend after “Want” hit the Internet, the Idol runner-up was quick to explain that — despite Wilshire’s claims — some of the recordings date back four years ago, and the songs don’t feature his songwriting. “Back in 2005, when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio,” Lambert said in the statement. “The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. I’m thrilled to be working with some of today’s hottest songwriters and producers and can’t wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like.” As Rock Daily reported last week, Lambert has already drafted Lady Gaga producer RedOne to contribute tracks to his official debut album. On With The Show and his fall debut disc might not be the only Glambert-related releases on the horizon: According to the Wilshire press release, the indie label has “two albums’ worth of material [Lambert] recorded.” According to MTV, neither Lambert nor Idol’s 19 Recordings are expected to take any legal action to prevent On With The Show’s release. As for what fans can expect from Lambert’s real debut, “My album is gonna be siiiiiiiiick,” Lambert said on his new Twitter account. With so much behind them, and so much ahead, they manage to come across as friends who've gotten together for nothing more than a casual jam session. "I'm not feeling the backup vocals," Danny Gokey offers at one point, after Adam Lambert notes that a transition in the reworked song is sounding awkward. "I'm open to suggestions. It's very much a collaborative effort," responds musical director Dave Kochanski. It's also, at least this morning, a relaxed one. At one point, Gokey delivers a full-blast note and, adding his own color commentary, declares the "crowd is in shock and awe." Later, the former Milwaukee church music director playfully exhorts the room, "If God's been good to you, I want you to say yeah!" I really wanted people to identify with my entertainment before my personal life. I wanted people to enjoy my performances and get on board." "Now that some people have, I feel more free to become personal," he said. Iraheta, who calls her "Slow Ride" duet with Lambert a personal "highlight" of the contest, said the pair, both of Los Angeles, have been talking about recording a song together. "I'm definitely down for that ... that would be so much fun," Iraheta said with a grin. She's also upbeat about something else: Getting rid of her braces. "There's just one sucker, a tooth in the middle, that just doesn't want to get straight," she says. "But I'm just tired of the braces so I'm probably gonna get them out before we hit the first venue."

Lambert, whose powerful voice and glam style made him both an object of admiration and mystery during the Fox TV singing contest ("I know who I am" was the mantra he repeated to questions about his sexuality), said in a Rolling Stone cover story that he's gay.

During a break from the tour rehearsal, Lambert said although "I wear myself on my sleeve," he wanted to keep part of his life private as he introduced himself to the "Idol" audience.

"It's weird when you're all of a sudden thrust into the public spotlight. It's a hard road to navigate," he said, and "you have to protect certain parts of yourself and see how it's going to play out. ... I really wanted people to identify with my entertainment before my personal life. I wanted people to enjoy my performances and get on board."

"Now that some people have, I feel more free to become personal," he said.

Iraheta, who calls her "Slow Ride" duet with Lambert a personal "highlight" of the contest, said the pair, both of Los Angeles, have been talking about recording a song together.

"I'm definitely down for that ... that would be so much fun," Iraheta said with a grin.

She's also upbeat about something else: Getting rid of her braces.

"There's just one sucker, a tooth in the middle, that just doesn't want to get straight," she says. "But I'm just tired of the braces so I'm probably gonna get them out before we hit the first venue."

Apparently American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert recorded an album in 2007 and 2008, before anyone had ever heard of him. Now, not shockingly, somebody is trying to cash in with these early recordings. A label called Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records has just released a "single," called "Want," from the sessions, and an album, On With the Show, is due out later this summer.Check out the song below, then let us know what you think. Is this nothing more than a cheap cash-in? Or can you never have enough Adam Lambert?

John Hecker, CEO of Hi Fi Recordings, said Friday that the tracks were recorded in 2007 and 2008.

"We were presented with a business opportunity," said Hecker. "We accepted because Wilshire Records had a long working relationship with Adam, and it resulted in excellent music that they had the rights to. The music has an audience, and it deserves to be heard." Hecker said Wilshire Records approached Hi Fi Recordings about releasing the material earlier this year when Lambert was gaining success on the show. He said the album will feature 11 or 12 songs, many of which were co-written by Lambert.

He described "On with the Show" as a "complete album" that would include mid- and up-tempo songs, ballads and rock tunes.

UPDATE: Lambert has just released a statement responding to the release of this new song:

"Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studio singer to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was broke at the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped at the opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio. The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. I'm thrilled to be working with some of today's hottest songwriters and producers and can't wait for people to hear what my music really sounds like."

‘I’m not hot!’ the singer said when he was told he made People’s list

“American Idol’s” Adam Lambert recently revealed that he’s gay and single and now the rocker has scored himself a spot on People’s Hottest Bachelor’s list.

“Am I really?” the raven-haired singer asked Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell, who revealed the news. “I’m not hot!”

“How great is that though — to show how far you have come? Because that means you’re a bachelor — straight, gay — it’s just that you’re a good looking man,” O’Dell noted. “You’re attractive to many people.”

“That’s pretty cool. That’s really cool,” Lambert said once the news set in. “I think that attractiveness is a universal thing. It shouldn’t matter who your preference is. I mean, it’s like, (if) you think something is good-looking, you think it’s good-looking. What’s the difference?”

When asked if he thought being open with his sexuality is changing people’s minds, Lambert said for him, it’s just a bonus as he is focused on being an entertainer above all.

“I mean my goal is to just sing,” he laughed “I’m just putting on a show, you know, and if that’s how people feel about it then that’s really cool.”

The biggest risk I've ever taken is going on American Idol and trying to be myself," says the 27-year-old reality show star. "I wasn't going to try too hard to conform, and I knew that it could possibly not work out."

Since the finale of “American Idol” last month, where Lambert finished as the runner-up to Kris Allen, a host of rumors have come about the San Diego 27-year-old. In addition to confirming questions about his sexual orientation, Lambert has also gone on record about the gossip that he’s set to front British rock superstar act Queen.

“(Brian May) expressed interest in possible collaborations in the future. We got along great. Roger Taylor and Brian May were class acts — gentlemen, really positive, inspirational, kind of forces on stage with Kris and I,” Lambert explained of the “Idol” season finale collaboration. “I think he expressed interest in maybe working on something in the future but it was never said, ‘Oh you’re going to be the new lead singer.’”

While Lambert has plenty to keep him busy — including his upcoming album, set for release this fall on RCA Records — he said he may branch out in other ways eventually.

When O’Dell asked if he ever thought about doing a clothing line, Lambert revealed there is actually a cosmetic product he may have an interest in.

“Maybe (an) eyeliner, nail polish combo line,” Adam said. “It will be very livable. You can put it on and it will stay for the whole week.”

"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I'm gay," American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert tells the new issue of Rolling Stone. "I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I've been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner." Lambert says he decided to wait to come out in Rolling Stone because it would be "cooler." He explains, "Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, 'I'm going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler.' I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context. I'm proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It's just another part of me."
According to Rolling Stone, Adam was open about his sexuality backstage at Idol. Lambert admits that he was nervous about coming out while Idol was still on the air because contestants are under a media embargo, preventing them from talking to reporters, and he wanted to do it on his "own terms." (He also says producers were open to him handling it however he wanted to.) "I was worried that [coming out] would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing," Lambert tells the mag. "I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. it shouldn't matter. Except it does. It's really confusing." Lambert says he was inspired to audition for the Fox network singing competition after having a "psychedelic experience" at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. There, he says, he experimented with "certain funguses." "I knew that it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it's fast and broad," he says of Idol. Despite being gay, Glambert says he enjoys attention from the ladies too. "I loved it this season when the girls went crazy for me," he says. "As far as I'm concerned, it's all hot."

Plus, Adam reveals to Rolling Stone that he had a crush on Idol winner Kris Allen during the show! When Idol producers put him in a room to share with Allen, Lambert says his first thought was, "They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight." Glambert also talks about the many photos of him dressed in drag and making out with boys that leaked on the Internets. He says that he forgot to remove photos from his profile on a social network for the Burning Man festival in Nevada. "Wasn't ready for that," he says. "I've only dressed in drag three or four times. … I don't tuck and wear breasts, that's not me." Lambert proclaims that he supports the gay-rights movement but doesn't want to be really involved. Mkay. "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader," he says.
Stereotypes about gays do annoy Adam. "Clay Aiken's gay, and I'm gay, and we couldn't be more different. The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we're gay. … Why can't we talk about a human community?" In addition to his homosexuality, Lambert shares other personal details with Rolling Stone. At 21, he was in a European tour of Hair for six months. That was when he dyed his hair black. In Germany, he started smoking pot and tried Ecstasy. But he does have limits. Among his dislikes: cocaine.
"That drug is such a reflection of the lack of self-esteem and control people have over themselves and their lives," he says. Lambert credits the FOX reality show with helping him gain self confidence. "I finally checked into my self-worth for the first time in my life, and the fact that it coincided with Idol is so sweet," he says. "I mean, I still have moments where I think, 'Oh, my skin is terrible, and I'm a little fat — I should really go to the gym more.' While much of the chatter surrounding “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert has to do with speculation about his sexuality, the behind-the-scenes talk at many of the stops along Lambert’s publicity tour is how difficult he is to work with.

“He is such a diva. Rude to everyone — from fans right down to the lighting folks,” said one person who worked with Lambert.
“A-list celebrities have come through here and been infinitely more polite,” said another person who worked with Lambert during a stop in New York.
Lambert should change his attitude quickly, according to one music producer. “No one sells that many records these days to be able to get away with that kind of behavior. To be a success you need literally everyone in your corner.”

Adam Lambert came out last night... well, he came out of a club in West Hollywood, but he was holding hands with his new boyfriend Drake LaBry, according to Perez Hilton.
Perez reports that the American Idol alum and crowd-pleaser was snuggling up to his new beau all night, and kept his clinch on the handsome guy as they left Guys and Dolls. Drake LaBry, 24, is an artist and interior designer.

It was rumored that Adam was waiting to declare himself in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone. He previously said it was good for fans to "keep speculating" when it came to his sexuality, although AI judge Kara DioGuardi claims it was never any secret.
"I don't think that Adam was ever in [the closet]," Kara said. "I think he was always openly out."

Adam Lambert tells The Associated Press what fans can expect from debut album. “My record will be kind of a rock-pop-electronic-dance thing,” the ‘American Idol’ season eight runner-up said. “I don’t know how to describe it. I think it’s gonna take on a life of its own, as far as genre goes. There’s a way to take the glam rock of the ’70s and the classic rock of the ’70s and kind of modernize it… I want it to be produced in a very very current, almost futuristic, way.”

Adam Lambert says role models come in a variety of different forms – even in eye makeup, fingernail polish and tight pants.

"It's a really, really cool thing," the American Idol runner-up says, "to be able to show people that you can be yourself, and you should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what you're about, and never make apologies for it."

So to those who speculate about his sexuality, he has a message. "Calm down," he says, and "keep speculating."

Lambert, 27, who finished second to Kris Allen in the show that ended May 20, says his comfort with himself can serve as an example. "It feels really amazing to be able to try and pass that on to kids and young adults who don't have a role model like that," he says. "It feels great because I never had a role model like that."

"Conforming is not cool," he adds. "Embracing who you are and what makes you different is actually what's really cool ... The kids that are different and out there and expressive and are bold with those choices, those are the people that grow up to be people we all want to hang out with, that become celebrities or become really successful in what they do because they believe in who they are."

As for all the talk about his personal life, Lambert says just one word when asked if he'll address his sexuality directly, say in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone: "Maybe."

NEW YORK - Adam Lambert may not have won the “American Idol” title, but he made some fans among the music elite — the members of Queen — who are looking to speak to him about possibly doing something in the future. “Amongst all that furor, there wasn’t really a quiet moment to talk,” Brian May, who performed with the singer on the “Idol” finale, told Rolling Stone in an e-mail. “But [drummer Roger Taylor] and I are definitely hoping to have a meaningful conversation with him at some point.” While the guitarist shot down rumors that Lambert had been offered the role of Queen frontman, May confirmed he would like to work with Lambert again. “It’s not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn’t that easy,” Brian wrote. “But I’d certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there.” May said no matter what happens, he is looking forward to seeing what happens with the raven-haired “Idol” runner-up. “I’m confident Adam will make great use of this wonderful opportunity,” he said. “I hope I’m there to see it.” But the Queen axeman’s praise wasn’t limited to just Lambert. “Both those boys are well worthy of big success,” May added.
